Comprehensive Design Project - University of Moratuwa, Department of Civil Engineering

Supervised by : Prof. C.S. Lewangamage, Dr. Buddhika Weerasinghe

I led a team of nine students in a project aimed at designing a self-sustainable technological faculty building complex for Sabaragamuwa University in Sri Lanka. The complex was meticulously planned to maximize the efficient use of land, with special attention given to preserving the native ecological aspects of the site. Consequently, the buildings were strategically designed to seamlessly integrate into the natural environment.

In addition to adhering to local regulations and guidelines, we prioritized ensuring the structural integrity of the designed buildings. This was achieved through the implementation of finite element modeling and standard structural design methods. The project adopted a holistic approach, encompassing the various facets of a standard construction project, and spanned across three semesters.

The steps included:

  1. Project TOR preparation and scope finalization
  2. Conceptual stage and alternatives
  3. Feasibility study
  4. Architectural design
  5. Building services design
  6. Superstructure design
  7. Substructure design
  8. Environmental assessment
  9. Traffic analysis
  10. Sustainability aspects and LEED certification
  11. Tender documents & BOQ

This experience significantly enhanced my leadership skills, fostering adaptability and openness to diverse perspectives—essential qualities for success in any research group.

Skill Up with CES - Civil Engineering Society, University of Moratuwa

Alongside my academic pursuits, I actively participated in numerous extracurricular activities at the university, driven by my passion for community service, leadership, and volunteerism. I played a key role in the University of Moratuwa’s Civil Engineering Society. As the chair of the external affairs committee, I initiated the Skill Up with CES project to enhance academic and industrial knowledge for civil engineering undergraduates in Sri Lanka.
